Two South Korean gamers are now free to suit up for a Japanese professional e-sports team, thanks to work visas they received from Japan's Ministry of Justice. Since the communist revolution of 1959, the Castro regime has enforced a strict ban on all forms of information flow that challenge official policy and history. Enforcing such censorship has been relatively easy for an island nation that has a monopoly over all media outlets. But when the internet arrived in the '90s, it complicated matters for the Castro's. As Cubans get a taste for the wonder that is the internet, they want more. As internal pressure grows, the Cuban regime will likely continue to find creative ways to offer the internet without losing control of the flow of information. The opening of Cuba to foreign investment and travel will only speed up the process. Various exterior shots of "Central Palace of Computers" LEAD IN: Computer gamers are getting the chance to try to topple a Cuban strongman. A new 3-D experience allows players to recreate decisive battles from the island's revolution in the 1950s. They get to fight alongside bearded guerillas clad in the olive green of Fidel Castro and Ernesto "Che" Guevara. STORYLINE: The mission, if gamers choose to accept it, is to help overthrow Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista. Developed by island programmers, "Gesta Final," or "Final Heroic Deed," gives young people an insight into the 1950's uprising, which involved many of their grandparents and which led to the ouster of Batista in 1959. "The children and youngsters of today like this type of product the most, so we tried to reflect the history of Cuba in a video game," says Haylin Corujo, of Cuba's Youth Computing Club, who lead the development team. "In 'Gesta Final' we primarily enact revolutionary deeds from 1956 to 1959." The game starts off with the user joining the 82 rebels who in 1956 sailed to Cuba from Mexico aboard the Granma, a creaky and now-iconic yacht that has become synonymous with the revolution. After a brief description of the historic landing, gamers find themselves wading through the wetlands of southeastern Cuba surrounded by fellow guerrillas, identifiable by the black-and-red armbands of Fidel and Raul Castro's revolutionary movement. Dark-helmeted Batista soldiers and mustard-yellow rural police pop out from behind trees and open fire from trucks and farmhouses. If you are hit three times, it is game over. The keyboard-operated game has five levels, most named after historical battles like "La Plata" and "El Uvero," and the scenery is full ancient vehicles and mountain trails typical of the Cuban countryside. "They themselves have said it helps to know, play, and deepen their knowledge of Cuban history." === You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/youtube/bc3249272af5ad73b72cf551ba2e3c4b Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork

Two South Korean professional gamers have obtained work visas to compete for a Japanese team. A first-of-its-kind decision for e-sports competitors. Transcript: It's official: Professional video gamers are just like other athletes, at least in the eyes of the Japanese government. Two South Korean gamers are now free to suit up for a Japanese professional e-sports team, thanks to work visas they received from Japan's Ministry of Justice. It's the first time e-sports athletes have received such a visa. Essentially, Japan is acting as it usually does when foreign athletes are drafted by a Japanese sports team. But this time, instead of playing soccer or basketball, they're playing "League of Legends." "League of Legends," which features two teams facing off in an online battle, is one of the world's most popular video games for e-gamers. And if you don't think "League of Legends" athletes are worth star treatment, think again. Last year's world championship final peaked at 14 million viewers, roughly on par with viewership for last year's World Series here in the U.S. The year before that the world final was held in a World Cup soccer stadium in Seoul, South Korea, complete with 40,000 live spectators. But the popularity of e-sports is lagging in Japan compared to the rest of the world, something that could be helped along by acquiring foreign talent to play for Japanese teams. The Japan eSports Federation, which was founded about a year ago, called the Japanese government's decision a "historic event that officially recognizes professional e-sports players as being equal in status to competitors in other sports." Americans will soon have firsthand experience with the highest levels of "League of Legends" play. This year's world championship will be held in the U.S., with the final at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
